    Interview Preperation & Process

What can I expect as I go through the interview process?
Typically a Recruiter, such as myself, will contact you via a phone call, e-mail or both. The very first thing EVERY Microsoft recruiter will ask you to do is to apply online for the position that interests you most. If you are interested in Search, all of the positions are just right above this blog posting for your viewing pleasure.

Once you have applied to the position it is important that you immediately let your recruiter know you are ready to proceed. At that point t
hey will 1) either arrange a time to talk 2) send you an E Screen. HINT: Read the directions in ANY screen VERY carefully .

Once the initial screen is complete, it is coupled with your resume and sent to a group of Hiring Managers for review. If there is mutual interest, you will either 1) Be invited to tech screen 2)Your recruiter will follow up with you and ask additional questions. The Technical Screen is conducted by Phone and is typically just one hour with either the Hiring Manager or a Senior member of the team. During the screen you will be asked many problem solving questions, so take some time to prepare.

Within 24-48 hours after your technical screen your recruiter will contact you to let you know if they will be proceeding with On Site Interviews.

You made it to On Site Interviews, what happens now?
First, a recruiting coordinator will touch base with you to confirm an interview date and make necessary travel arrangments. Now its time to prepare for the big day:

The goals of the Microsoft interview process are for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us. We pride ourselves on an in-depth experience that allows that to happen. The process includes actually having you “do the job” during the interview. Expect that beyond asking questions about your background, we’ll also have you test features and write code. If you don’t feel comfortable with that, please let me know.

    During your interviews

Beyond practical questions, we want to learn more about how you think. When questions are ambiguous, you should ask for clarification. And for any situation, you should be able to put yourself in the position of the customer—how would you expect this product to work?

During your interview day, you can expect to meet with three-five people for one hour apiece, so be sure to get a good night’s sleep—it’s an exhausting day!  We have a healthy supply of beverages; however, you may wish to bring a snack or two. Bring your questions as well—what do you want to learn about the position, the team, the company in general. Your interviews will be with other Devs, Tests or PM's and Managers, so you’ll have the chance to have those issues addressed by the people doing the job. By the end of the day, we want to make sure that you’ve had a chance to learn what you need to know.

We’re very excited to have the chance to get to know you better, and we hope you’re excited to learn more about us.

    Applying to Jobs at Microsoft

Keys to Success/Microsoft Resumes and Interview Tips

Honesty and integrity. People who communicate in a direct and truthful manner, maintain confidentiality of information, readily admit mistakes, and follow through on everything they say they will do.

Openness and respect for others. People who have the ability to foster candid discussions, share information appropriately and quickly, encourage others to express their viewpoints, and listen and consider the experience and knowledge of others.

Willingness to take on big challenges. People who take smart risks and accept the consequences that go with them, motivate themselves and others during times of resistance or setbacks, focus intensely on the important tasks at hand, and put in the effort and hours necessary to get the job done right.

Passion for customers, partners, and technology. People who have the desire to build and maintain long-term relationships with customers, gain the trust and respect of customers, and champion the belief that information technology can improve the quality of life.

Accountability. People who take responsibility for results achieved by themselves, their team, and their group; who exceed the expectations of internal and external customers; who ensure that Microsoft responds quickly to changes in the marketplace; and who do not confuse activity with results.

Self-criticism. People who are willing to ask for and constructively use feedback about strengths and weaknesses, seek opportunities for personal and professional growth, and develop and mentor others.

At Microsoft, our values support our mission and clearly express why we create software: to enable people throughout the world to realize their full potential. It's a bold and authentic mission. But through great people with great values, we believe we can make it happen.

    Rainy in Seattle??? Nah!

Study Reveals Top 10 Wettest U.S. Cities

By Andrea Thompson, LiveScience Staff Writer

    posted: 18 May 2007 01:43 pm ET

    http://www.livescience.com/environment/070518_rainy_cities.html (full story link here)

Do you think Seattle is the rainiest city in the United States? Well, think again.

Mobile, Alabama, actually topped a new list of soggiest cities, with more than 5 feet of rainfall annually, according to a study conducted by San Francisco-based WeatherBill, Inc.

The Southeast dominated the most rainy list, while the Pacific Northwest never enters the list until Olympia, Washington pops up at number 24.

The 10 rainiest cities in the U.S. by amount of annual rainfall include:

    1.    Mobile, Alabama--67 inches average annual rainfall; 59 average annual rainy days

    2.    Pensacola, Florida--65 inches average annual rainfall; 56 average annual rainy days

    3.    New Orleans, Louisiana--64 inches average annual rainfall; 59 average annual rainy days

    4.    West Palm Beach, Florida--63 inches average annual rainfall; 58 average annual rainy days

    5.    Lafayette, Louisiana--62 inches average annual rainfall; 55 average annual rainy days

    6.    Baton Rouge, Louisiana--62 inches average annual rainfall; 56 average annual rainy days

    7.    Miami, Florida--62 inches average annual rainfall; 57 average annual rainy days

    8.    Port Arthur, Texas--61 inches average annual rainfall; 51 average annual rainy days

    9.    Tallahassee, Florida--61 inches average annual rainfall; 56 average annual rainy days

    10. Lake Charles, Louisiana--58 inches average annual rainfall; 50 average annual rainy days

The study ranked 195 cities in the contiguous 48 states by the amount of rainfall they received annually over a 30-year period, although Olympia actually had the most rainy days on average across the three decades (63) of all the cities in the study. Mobile came in second on the latter scale, with 59 average annual rainy days. (Several cities in Alaska and Hawaii actually receive more than 100 inches of rain a year, but were not included in the study.)

Southeastern cities are so prevalent on the list because the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico fuel storms that frequently soak the region, particularly between June and November.

The study also found that in the past 30 years, the East and Southeast seemed to be getting wetter, while the West got drier. Florida, Louisiana and Alabama were the wettest states, while California, Montana, Nevada and Arizona were the driest (Las Vegas took the top spot for driest city).

Average rainfall was highest in the United States between July and September and lowest between January and March.

10 Reinvigorating Facts About Microsoft's Profits

10 Reinvigorating Facts About Microsoft's Profits
Monday April 30, 5:57 am ET

Joe Panettieri: I have written extensively about Microsoft's (NasdaqGS: MSFT) problems. But last week, I got a stunning reminder about the company's power. It takes Microsoft only 10 hours of business to exceed Red Hat's entire quarterly profit. Skeptical? Check out the math, and nine other facts about Microsoft's most recent earnings report.

Microsoft last week announced quarterly revenue of $14.4 billion and net income of $4.93 billion. In other words, Microsoft's daily net income is about $55 million. That's $55 million in pure profit every 24 hours. Do some quick math and you'll learn it takes Microsoft only about...

    ·         10 hours or so (yes, hours!) to exceed Red Hat's (NYSE: RHT - News) quarterly net income of $20.5 million.

    ·         Four days to exceed Research In Motion's (NasdaqGS: RIMM) quarterly net income of $187.9 million.

    ·         Four days to exceed Starbucks' (NasdaqGS: SBUX) quarterly net income of $205 million.

    ·         One week to exceed Nike's (NYSE: NKE - News) quarterly net income of $350.8 million.

    ·         Two weeks to exceed McDonalds' (NYSE: MCD - News) quarterly net income of $762 million.

    ·         Two weeks to exceed Apple's (NasdaqGS: AAPL) quarterly net income of $770 million.

    ·         18 days to exceed Google's (NasdaqGS: GOOG) quarterly net income of $1 billion.

    ·         23 days to exceed Coca-Cola's (NYSE: KO - News) quarterly net income of $1.26 billion.

    ·         Five weeks to exceed IBM's (NYSE: IBM - News) quarterly net income of $1.85 billion.

    ·         10 weeks to exceed Wal-Mart's (NYSE: WMT - News) quarterly net income of $3.9 billion. For a dead company, Microsoft's profits certainly look lively.
